The Mansfield Cowl is worked in the round in a deeply textured rib and welt pattern stitch. There's a few rounds of stockinette at top and bottom for a rolled edge, which echoes the main pattern.

The sample is worked in a bulky yarn at a fairly tight gauge, at the shortest height and small circumference. Let it cover your coat collar, or tuck it in - either way, you can definitely snuggle in! This design also works very well at longer lengths - the pattern stitch looks just as good on the wrong side, making it perfect for looping and wrapping.

1 hank for a cowl 24 inches/60 cm in circumference, 8 inches/20 cm in depth. To add depth or circumference, you'll need a second hank . 2 hanks for a cowl of short depth and medium circumference and 3 hank for a cowl of medium circumference with extra depth, or large circumference with short depth.
The patterning is most dramatic in heavier gauge yarns. Consider Berroco Ultra Wool Chunky, or Malabrigo Mecha. This would look terrific in a solid, semi solid, or speckled colorway; noticeable color variations will obscure the stitch patterning.
